The Local Yarn Shop started to decline from the 1990’s onwards but thankfully there has been a slow revival in recent years. The following is a list of Yarn/Craft shops across Northern Ireland, the UK Mainland and Ireland.
Located in the Kilroot Business Park just outside Eden village, Carrickfergus is a wonderland of fabric and crafts. This is a must visit place if you are into sewing and quilting in any form. They have a huge stock of fabric and other crafty items.
Located in Queen Street in the centre of Belfast City its stocks everything from Yarn, fabric, sewing, papercraft, stamping etc. The yarn range has expanded quiet a bit in recent years and its a good place for RICO and Bergere de France yarns. Shop is open Monday to Saturday 9 to 5.30pm
The Glen Gallery is situated on a farm in the Cullybackey countryside. They are Rowan stockists for Northern Ireland and have a very wide range of craft things beyond knitting including a very well stocked library of craft books for sale. The Glen Gallery also has an excellent annual schedule of workshops with Rowan Designers such as Sarah Hatton.
It opened in 1957 and has been in its current location on the Cregagh Road in East Belfast for over 50 years. Jeans Wool Shop stocks a wide range of yarns and is a good place to get your sock yarn. Shop is open Monday – Saturday 9.30 to 5pm. Closed all day Wednesday and Sunday.
Louise is the owner has originally started with a stall in St. George’s Market in Belfast City Centre. She continued to run her stall there on Saturdays and Sundays until recently when she moved to her new bricks and mortar shop in Whitehead.
Selections Wool Shop
Selections is located in North Street, Carrickfergus. They stock a wide range of yarns including RICO, Sirdar and Bergere de France. They don’t have a website but you can contact them by telephone on +44 28 9335 1118
Rosemary stocks a large range of wonderful yarns including Garnstudio Drops and recently added local Irish Smudge Yarns. The shop is located a short walk from Dublin City Centre on Frances Street. Opening times on the website.
TIK is run by mother (Jacqui) and daughters (Lisa & Jenny) with their growing team of crafty staff. The shop is located in the heart of Dublin City Centre just a short walk away from Grafton Street. Opening times change between Winter and Summer hours so check out current times on their website. TIK do a fabulous range of yarn including Hedgehog Fibres and Coolree, and regularly holds designer workshops. Details on their website.
Based on the Sandown Road n Belfast the Textile Studio opened its doors in May 2013. Asa’s shop has a wonderful collection of yarns, fabrics, ribbons, buttons and haberdashery…everything you will need to knit, sew or crochet.
Winnie’s is located in Booterstown, just a short DART ride from Dublin Connolly station. And if you make the journey the other end is full of yarn and yummy eats in the cafe. Its makes a wonderful excursion if your in Dublin. You can find out more on the link above.
